Where to Visit in Morocco by Month?

The coastal country of Morocco, located in the northwest of Africa, is always an enchanting destination, with beautiful desert, cozy beaches, ancient sites of history, making it a place where there is always something to see and do at different times and seasons. But as a traveler planning a trip to Morocco, when is the best time to visit? Below is a detailed guide to the best times to visit by month. Don't hesitate to find the best time to visit Morocco!

Popular cities like Marrakesh in the west of the foothills of the Grand Atlas and Tangier on the Moroccan coast often get above-average rainfall, while much of the nation has pleasant weather in January. Be equipped with caution if you're visiting those cities, or if you'd like, spend some time in the dry climate of the Sahara desert or the highlands. Places like Ouarzazate, also called the "door of the desert," provide convenient access to both the Sahara desert and the Grand Atlas region and are very agreeable in the month of January.

The Atlantic coastline, especially the beach resort of Essaouira, is a fantastic choice due to its milder climate. When preparing for your Morocco tour in January, it is recommended that you look out for destinations in the southern part of the country, which is warmer than the north.

With a warmer and more pleasant climate in February, you can opt for the coastline of the Atlantic, where you can expect balmy temperatures, or you can experience delightful outdoor activities like hiking, open-sky nights, and dunes surfing in the Saraha or Agafay deserts. Although the mountains of the Grand Atlas are a comfortable choice year-round, be aware that heavy rainfall in January and February may cause river levels to rise to impassable levels, closing off access to several paths.

Visitors aiming for the coastal lands on the Atlantic coast may enjoy pleasant, balmy weather. Places like Essaouira, the city port, and Sidi Ifni, with its beautiful shores, are good shelters during this rainy month.

Throughout March, exploring the desert, which is less crowded, is also a good option. The Grand Atlas is a fantastic destination that is accessible all year, but be prepared for rain. The Riff is very popular for hikers during this period, but just like the Atlas Mountains, precipitation may be encountered.

Merzouga is a great place to start a trip into the desert, and if you time it right, you can also enjoy the music events of the town. Discover the Saharan customs of Marrakech and explore the ancient city's souks and mosques. Travel to Taroudan and blend with Berber villagers; learn about their culture. Also, the fine, clean sand of Agadir beaches is the place of leisure you need during this period.

It is not advisable to explore the desert in the months of June through September due to the extreme heat. May is the last call for a trip to the Sahara or Agafay while temperatures are still bearable. Due to the increasing temperatures in the desert during the month, it is recommended that your visit be planned at the beginning of the month.

In June, with the high temperatures, it is preferable to explore chillier places like the Riff Mountains or go diving in one of the country's magnificent coastal towns, including Essaouira, Mirleft, or Al Hoceima, with the Riff Mountains in the background. These options allow you to beat the crowd.

You shouldn't go exploring in the desert in June. That trip is best postponed until the months of September through November, when the weather is less scorching. During this month, avoid visiting the unbearably hot southern Moroccan cities and instead travel to northern towns such as Tangier, Fez, Chefchaouen, and Rabat, where temperatures are more bearable.

If you are planning to explore imperial cities like Fes, Marrakesh, or Meknes, it is recommended to be an early bird since daytime highs may soar to above 110°F. After touring the imperial cities, it is best to escape the extreme heat of the inland for a moment of leisure on the Atlantic coast, where the heat is slightly diminished by the breeze.

The city port of Essaouira is a terrific summertime destination for both tourists looking for water activities and delectable cuisine. Hikers may want to head to the High Atlas, but be aware that temperatures, despite being slightly attenuated there, are still very high. July and August are the best times for leisurely, short-distance walks at dawn and relaxing in the pool with sweeping vistas of the mountains, but they are not the best times for challenging hiking.

Just like during the preceding months (July and August), whether it is the Merzouga, the Erg Chigaga, or the Sahara Deserts, it is definitely a bad idea to visit those places in September, mostly if you can't tolerate the baking hot temperatures. September also marks the return of school, so popular sites like the ancient cities and the beaches on the Atlantic Coastline are less crowded. In addition, hikers will certainly enjoy the pleasant weather in the Riff and the High Atlas.

You can travel almost everywhere in Morocco without worrying about the weather in October and November. Southern coastal cities, including Casablanca, Sidi Ifni, El Jadida, and Agadir, are the perfect destinations for beach lovers. The weather is excellent, and the beaches are less crowded during this time of the year. During this season, it is recommended to skip cities like Tangier and Essaouira, where the wind increases considerably and makes it difficult to enjoy your time on the sand.

Once the scorching summer months of Marrakesh are over, the weather becomes pleasant, and it is an ideal time to explore the ancient city.

In fall, the weather turns chilly at night in the High Atlas and the Riff Mountains, so it's a good idea to pack appropriate clothes in case you plan to go trekking or hiking.

During the month of November, especially, visitors may enjoy going on camel rides, hiking, or camping in the desert, but you should also bring appropriate clothing to keep you warm at nightfall. This is a great time to visit the historic cities of Rabat, Fes, and Marrakesh or the ancient cities of Volubilis, Lixus, Chellah, and Ait Ben Haddou.

December is an excellent month for desert camping, ATV excursions, and trekking. It is also a good time to go hiking in the Riff and High Atlas Mountains, but you should be prepared for the nighttime temperatures and your itinerary to avoid getting stuck in the mountains when the sun goes down.

Morocco's popular and historical sites are less crowded and have pleasant temperatures during the first week of December, which makes it a great time to tour comfortably.
