Day 2: Amman - Petra
Explore the historical Madaba with hundreds of mosaics from the 5th through the 7th centuries scattered throughout the churches and homes. The wonderfully vivid, 6th-century Byzantine Mosaic Map on the floor of St. George Church shows the entire region from Jordan and Palestine in the north, to Egypt in the south. Drive upwards to the sacred Mt. Nebo to see the panorama Moses viewed: the Dead Sea, the Jordan River Valley, Jericho, Bethlehem and the distant hills of Jerusalem (on a clear day). On route, poke your head into a Jordanian handicrafts shop and watch how mosaic art is created in Byzantine style. Keep up to Petra by car (around 3.5 hours) for the night.

Day 3: Petra
Don't get lost in the "Lost City" of Petra. Carved directly into vibrant red, white, pink, and sandstone cliff faces, this city was once a thriving trading center and the capital of the Nabataean empire. After around 2 hours guided tour, you can discover these ancient and mysterious ruins on your own. You'll be amazed by the 2- kilometer Siq with 200-meter-high walls on sides, the grandeurs of the Treasury, the elaborate royal tombs as well as the complex system of water management in this desert. Stay overnight in Petra.
